My name is Klárika and I am 10 years old. At home, I am the youngest and the only girl among five siblings. My father is a forester and my mother is a housewife. We live on a small farm on the outskirts of the village of Csekefalva.
On school days, I walk a long way to school, and I’m there from morning till evening, but I like it very much because I learn to read and write. At lunchtime, I don’t have time to go home, so I stay in school and eat the snacks my mother makes for me.
When I’m not in school, I help my mother at home with the housework and the farm chores.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading the daily newspaper called Csíki Lapok. I’m always curious to learn what’s happening outside our small village. I can’t wait to learn new things about this wonderful world and to imagine all the exciting things I read about. Now that I also know how to write, I started a diary with the most interesting stories I found in the daily newspaper. This way I can practise my writing and I will have some great stories to tell my friends and family.
They often write in the newspaper that we are living in difficult times. They say that nobody knows where the world is going and that there is poverty. They also talk about the war. Sometimes I also hear my parents worry if there will be enough food and money, but they are not sad, not at all. They are very funny people, and we laugh a lot together.
I also enjoy the company of my friends, and we have the best time when we meet for yarn spinning. During the winter, this happens daily when all the girls gather and we spin yarn from wool using the spinning wheel. The best part is that, in the meantime, we can chat about what is happening in the village and we can share with each other the latest news and funny stories about the local people. It’s also a good opportunity for me to present some of the stories from my diary. Sometimes the boys from the village would visit and tease us, adding to the fun and laughter.
The other winter activities I’m excited about are skating and sleighing down the snowy hills of Csekefalva. After a day spent moving outdoors in the fresh winter air and returning home hungry, there is nothing better than a traditional snack made with bread, bacon, and cheese.
Life in the village is quite joyful, and our community does many things together. People help each other out. They build and farm together, but they also enjoy life together. The Sunday ball is the best time when grownups meet to chat, dance, relax, eat and drink, just to have a good time. My mother and father always look on the bright side of life. Besides working hard, they also love to dance and party, and they never miss these community events. My brothers also know how to have fun. They appreciate music and are members of the local brass orchestra.
From all the exciting things that happened to me this year, I believe learning to read and write brought the greatest change in my life. Since then, I have read so many wonderful stories and learned fascinating things about the world, and now it’s my turn to share with you some of the best stories from my up-to-date diary.
See you soon!
Klárika
